Rail freight doesn’t offer the same reach as road transport, since not every town is consistently served by rail networks. Road freight, on the other hand, provides the critical ‘last mile’ delivery that rail cannot—trucks are often needed to move cargo between railway stations and customer locations or factories. Shipments via rail can be consolidated into wagons or packed into individual containers. Transnet offers exclusive 3-meter and 9-meter containers designed for rail and road use, which aren't available in sea freight. That said, standard sea freight containers can also be transported by rail when needed.
